When embroidering on infants’ and toddler’s clothing you’ll want to take steps to avoid irritating the skin with the back of the embroidery design. The combination of stabilizer and threads can chafe sensitive skin. The solution is simple! Just apply a cover of fusible polymesh stabilizer or fusible tricot interfacing over the back of the embroidery.
Another occasion when covering the wrong side of embroidery is the right thing to do, is when embroidering a handbag or tote.
Leaving the back of stitching exposed in a “high traffic” area may cause sharp or small articles to catch and pull the embroidery threads. If you are constructing a bag from scratch, a lining will take care of the problem. If not, apply a fusible interfacing to the inside of the bag. Fusible interfacing comes primarily in white and black. A fun and unique option is to make your own interfacing from a coordinating cotton fabric by using a fusible fabric product used for appliqué. This bonding material can turn most any fabric into a fusible fabric.
